MMG Kinsevere Boosts Community Inclusion with Youth Recruitment Initiative
MMG Kinsevere has taken a major step in advancing its community inclusion efforts by integrating 200 young people from 26 villages surrounding its mining operations into its workforce.
On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, these individuals officially joined the professional sector through recruitment by Congo Astrale Company (CAC), the new security provider tasked with safeguarding the mining site.
The presentation ceremony took place at the Cultural Center in Kifita village, located in the Kipushi territory’s Bukanda sector. The event was attended by officials from various entities invited by CAC.
Gaunce Bupe, Kipushi Territorial Administrator, expressed gratitude to CAC and MMG Kinsevere for their dedication to fostering local employment opportunities. He stated:
“With great emotion, I would like to thank MMG Kinsevere for their efforts and close collaboration with territorial and traditional authorities. Today, we are seeing tangible results.”
The 200 recruits will receive specialized training before joining the security team at the Kinsevere site. They were encouraged to view their roles as a means of spreading economic benefits throughout their communities.
MMG Kinsevere’s contributions, including the construction of schools, health centers, and infrastructure like water and electricity networks, have been pivotal in driving sustainable development across the Bukanda sector.
Patrick Banza, MMG Kinsevere’s Security Supervisor, highlighted the significance of the initiative:
“This recruitment follows a well-established practice where community inclusion in our daily activities at the mine is prioritized. After recruiting 150 security officers in 2021, we are pleased to welcome 200 new colleagues. We will ensure they receive the training needed to meet MMG standards while providing meaningful employment opportunities for local communities.”
Located 30 km northeast of Lubumbashi in Haut-Katanga province, MMG Kinsevere operates under the financial backing of China Minmetals Corporation (CMC), its major shareholder.
CMC’s support has enabled significant investments, including the recently completed Kinsevere Expansion Project (KEP). This $600 million initiative introduced new facilities, such as an RGA and an acid plant, to process sulphide copper and cobalt following the depletion of oxide ore.
Beyond enhancing operational capabilities, KEP underscores MMG Kinsevere’s commitment to sustainable development and community welfare, ensuring local populations benefit from the mine’s presence for years to come.
